Fred G. Sager was born in
August of 1938 and raised in Manhattan. He moved to the
Bronx after marrying Catherine Murphy. When the
neighborhood began showing signs of an obvious turn for
the worse, Fred and Cathy had the foresight to move
their family to Great Neck in 1975. They moved into the
Town House Apartments on Cuttermill Road, where Fred
served as the superintendent of the complex. The Town
House Apartments are located next door to the
firehouse which had a great impression on the Sager
family as it
eventually lead
to four of them joining the fire department.
Fred joined the Vigilant
Fire Company in March of 1979 and served his
probationary period with his son Fred W. Sager. While he
worked at Townhouse he was most often seen milling
around the mailbox outside of the Cutter Mill Coffee
Shop (aka “Fast Eddies”).
Fred was elected to
Sergeant-at-Arms in 1984, served as Trustee in 1988 and
89, and appointed as Treasurer in September of 1991
where he served thru 1994. He was once again elected to
Trustee in 1995 and, served in that position until he
resigned from that in March of 1999. Fred had a knack
for quickly doing mathematics in his head. So quickly,
in fact, that he was often referred to as the “Rain Man”
after the hit movie
starring Tom Cruise and Dustin
Hoffman.
Some of Fred Sager’s
loves were vacationing at the family’s summer home in
Rockaway Beach, rooting for the New York Giants, working
on model car and planes, and eating chocolate. He loved
anything related to Walt Disney, but there’s no question
that Fred’s biggest love was his family. There was
nothing he would not do for his wife Cathy and children
Fred, Thomas, Laura, and Tara and he was never happier
than when he was in the company of his three
grandchildren Chelsea, Samantha, and Cody.
Fred G. Sager passed away
on August 27, 2000. The members of the Vigilant Fire
Company granted him Life Membership in November of 2000.
