Great Neck's Bravest team up with
Fox 5's Good Day New York to promote BBQ Safety
On Monday May 19th Great Neck Vigilant Ex-Chief Robert Lincoln join with Anne Craig from Fox 5's Good Day New York, for a segment on BBQ safety. The 1 minute segment aired at 745 AM and feature Chief Lincoln's important safety reminders. Keep the BBQ away from the house, always clean your gas BBQ at the beginning of the season, never add lighter fluid to an already burning charcoal grill. As Memorial Day approaches, and outdoor cooking becomes a bigger part of our culinary repertoire, we all should remember these and the other important safety reminders.
Lead by firefighter and professional film maker Josh Meyerson the members of the fire company prepared breakfast on the grills for the interview. The morning's menu included steak and eggs, sausage and of course plenty of BBQ.

Great Neck’s Bravest Host Red Cross Blood Drive
MARCH 13TH, 2008
On Thursday, March 13, 2008, the Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company hosted a blood drive with the American Red Cross at their firehouse on Cuttermill Road in Great Neck Plaza. 2nd Assistant Chief Joel D. Pierce in coordination with the leadership of the Vigilant Fire Company and the American Red Cross publicized the drive in the Great Neck area. Numerous members of the fire company and others from the community came out and donated 38 pints of blood to the American Red Cross Blood Bank.
Recently, there has been a shortage of blood available at our community’s blood banks. Thankfully the high volume of donors has helped to stem the shortage, but in no way cured the issue.
Future blood drives will be publicized here. For more information email 2nd Assistant Chief Joel D. Pierce

HAZARDOUS MATERIALS OPERATIONS DRILL
FEBRUARY 27TH, 2008
On Wednesday, February 27, 2008, members of the Vigilant Fire Company attended a drill on Hazardous Materials Operations (HazMat Ops) at their headquarters on Cuttermill Road. The focus of the two hour long classroom session was cooperation with the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office HazMat Team. Nassau County Supervising Fire Marshal Robert Hare gave a short presentation concentrating on the needs of the Fire Marshal’s office when cooperating with any local fire department at a HazMat emergency. A special demonstration by Vigilant Fire Company 2nd Assistant Chief Joel D. Pierce and Probationary Firefighter Matthew Farhnik gave the members a better understanding of what may be required to help a firefighter dress in HazMat exposure gear.
While HazMat Ops is often thought of in conjunction with terrorism, the Vigilant Fire Company and the 71 other fire departments in Nassau County respond regularly to HazMat calls. Incidents include Carbon Monoxide leaks, vehicle accidents with spills and other chemical reactions which could cause harm.
In the future with cooperation of the Fire Marshal’s Office and our neighboring departments the Great Neck Vigilant Fire Company will be, as they have been for the last 104 years ready to respond to any call for help in an emergency.
